Brainwaves Preschool

Karen and Rody O’Reilly

Brainwaves Preschool in Silverdale has a tranquil rural feel – the outlook from the large covered decks is of green fields where sheep quietly graze.

Situated right next to Snowplanet, and handy to the motorway for those pick-ups and drop- offs, Brainwaves has been owned and operated by a local family, Karen and Rody O’Reilly, since March.

Both Karen and Rody grew up on the Coast  and now have their own teenagers at local schools.

“We are deeply connected to the community in many different ways,” Karen says.

The couple, who also own Coast Montessori, have the ideal skillset for preschool ownership – Rody has 20 years’ experience as a primary and early childhood teacher (and leads the pre-school room) while Karen is an experienced manager. Both believe in the importance of high quality early childhood education and say this is reflected in both the physical environment and the skill of the staff they employ.

Brainwaves is a mid-size centre, freshly renovated and with a new playground. The centre caters for children from four months to five years old. is run on a philosophy of recognising each child as a completely unique individual and supporting them to follow their own interests through child-led play and exploration.

“When they are engaged in something that interests them, that’s when the learning happens,” Rody  says.

The preschool offers a wide range of play-based experiences, indoors and out, including the creative arts, with the learning extended by trained teachers.

“As well as preparation for school, there is a strong focus on social and emotional competence – things like resilience, curiosity and persistence,” Karen says.

The couple say their priority is “to develop strong relationships with children and families, based on trust and love”.
