Brand new MG for community patrol

A community effort has seen the Hibiscus Coast Community Patrol’s 16-year-old vehicle replaced with a brand new SUV.

The group’s 40 volunteer patrollers, based at the Orewa Police station, act as the ‘eyes and ears’ of Police, regularly driving around the Hibiscus Coast, Puhoi, Waitoki and Coatesville, day and night, to report anything that may be of interest to Police.

Community patrol chair, Sandra Sweetman, says the group needed to get back on the road this week, once Covid-19 restrictions made that possible, but that the old vehicle needed maintenance that the group could not afford.

The support of Tristram MG and other sponsors meant that only the final $4000 needed to be raised. However, this sum seemed out of reach until Hibiscus & Bays Local Board member, community patroller and Rotarian Andy Dunn put the patrol in touch with the Rotary Satellite club in Millwater.

As well as donating $250 from club funds, the Rotarians set up a Givealittle page and, less than one week later, $4000 was raised.

Sandra says the group wants to sincerely thank everyone who supported the effort, especially the Rotarians.

“We are really blown away by the generosity of the community,” she says.
