Close race for final local board spot

Update

The final spot has been won by first-timer Jake Law.

There are four members on the Hibiscus subdivision of the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board.

On progress results, it was a strong performance by the Coast People ticket, with the sole exception of former member Andy Dunn, who lost his seat, polling sixth.

Former chair Gary Brown polled highest with 7986 votes and Leanne Willis is just behind him with 6111. Sam Mills polled third.

Willis says she is a bit more prepared this time, in her second term on the local board.

“With one term under my belt, I hope to improve on the work we have done to date,” she says.

By contrast, it will be 34-year-old lawyer Mills’ first time in politics. He has campaigned particularly hard on supporting local youth initiatives.

The final spot will also go to a first timer – it is a close race for this between Nicholas Mitchell and Jake Law. Currently, Law is less than 50 votes behind, with specials still to be counted.

Nicholas Mitchell stood as an independent. He did not attend local ‘meet and greet’ events in the lead up to the elections, but has obviously garnered good support nevertheless.

The 32-year-old is a long-time resident of the Hibiscus Coast.

He has a background in finance and marketing and says he stood for election because he “wanted to offer his services and be of use”.

Law, who also stood for Albany Ward as councillor, is a teacher who campaigned on several issues including improving transport, affordable housing and investing in infrastructure.
