Auckland fire fighters headed to the city for the annual Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge on Saturday May 24. It was this event’s 21st consecutive year in support of Leukemia & Blood Cancer NZ.
This year’s event made history with a record 270 brigades taking part, making up a total of 1110 firefighters from New Zealand, Australia and Canada.
The Hibiscus Coast’s three brigades trained hard for this year’s record-breaking feat, with Manly, Puhoi and Silverdale stations all participating. More than $1.95 million dollars was raised overall. Manly raised $11,572, Puhoi $6714 and Silverdale $795.
Former Manly firefighter Mike Williamson, now at Takapuna brigade, celebrated his seventeenth climb up the tower, making him one of the most dedicated participants of the 21-year competition. He finished 53 out of 1046 and took third place in the Masters category.
Ben Smith of Auckland Airport Fire Rescue took out first place overall in a time of 08.39.06, meaning the all-time record holder Josh Harrison from Otara station remains the fastest.
