Veteran hockey player Colin Chester has helped the New Zealand Men’s Masters hockey team to a series win over Australia in the over-75 grade earlier this month.
Chester, a Coast resident for more than 50 years, was selected for the New Zealand side to play a 3-Test series against Australia’s over-75 (M75) team in Adelaide.
New Zealand won the series 2-1, taking the first Test 2-1 and the second 1-0 before Australia won the third 1-0.
Colin says it’s a “big result” as it may be the first time a New Zealand hockey team has won back-to-back tests against Australia.
At 74, he was one of four players in the New Zealand team aged under 75, brought in to make up the numbers. He says the team played well together and was well coached and managed.
The two sides are due to meet again next May in a Trans-Tasman series.
Chester is a life member of both the Hibiscus Dairy Flat Hockey Club and the North Harbour Hockey Association, and remains involved in the sport.
