Ōrewa College is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year and invites the community to join its festivities. First established as Ōrewa District High School in 1956 with just 101 students, the College now boasts more than 2330 students.
The anniversary will be celebrated across August, with the first event on August 19 a Foundation Generation Morning Tea, welcoming students from the college’s founding decade, 1956 to 1966, back to the campus. Current students will prepare and serve morning tea for the former students, with spouses and caregivers also welcome. Register by calling Ōrewa College on 09 427 3833.
On August 22, the college will host its larger community celebration, featuring food trucks, sports games between Ōrewa and Whangaparāoa Colleges, live entertainment from performing arts, music and cultural students, community stalls, school tours and more.
A special OC Museum will be set up across both events to showcase historic photos, memorabilia, and displays celebrating the school’s journey since its 1956 opening. The college is also creating replicas of early-era uniforms and a special OC currency for the event.
Alumni Coordinator Margaret Browne says the college’s history runs deep, with some staff members and parents having been part of the school community for many years. Principal Wiri Warriner attended both Ōrewa Primary and Ōrewa College, while Browne’s family spans three generations of alumni.
The College invites the community to participate, share memories and celebrate seven decades of Ōrewa College with them.
