Escape the rain with Escapism

Immersion and entertainment meet strategy and teamwork in Whangaparāoa’s journey into another universe.

If you’re after a more active and engaging challenge than simply sitting around a table, Escape Rooms might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Escape rooms are immersive, real-life puzzle games that challenge players to use teamwork, creativity, and quick thinking to solve a series of puzzles and riddles. Participants are locked in rooms ranging with themes that range from spooky mysteries to historical adventures and must work together against the clock to find clues, unlock doors, and ultimately escape. Hugely popular for social gatherings, team-building exercises, and family fun, escape rooms offer a hands-on alternative to traditional board games.

At Escapism on Karepiro Drive in Whangaparāoa, owner David Dennis has handcrafted much of the furniture himself using recycled items and his own construction skills. Each room is designed to tell a unique story, from a Zombie apocalypse to a crime caper, with adjustable difficulty levels tailored to suit players of all ages and experience.

You step into the softly-lit room, where hand-crafted furniture and decorations line the walls, with proportionally smaller tables and chairs to paint the scene. You have only 60 minutes to solve the mystery of your missing uncle and overcome the challenges he’s set, all to prove you’re worthy of joining him on his next big adventure.

Everything is a potential clue; look behind the mirrors, solve the riddles, and decode the puzzles. Nothing can be taken at face value.

Recently, the Hibiscus Matters team of four undertook this challenge, and we’re proud to say that articles aren’t the only deadline we’re able to meet. With two minutes left on the clock, the team solved the puzzles and made our fictional uncle proud.

Escapism caters for family, work, birthday and school holiday groups of four to seven per room.
