More than 700 runners and walkers took to Ōrewa Beach on December 13 for the inaugural Bayleys Ōrewa Beach Fun Run, with participants choosing either a 2.5km or 5km course.

The event was organised by Ōrewa College alumni, with $24,000 raised towards the school’s new fitness centre.

Ōrewa College principal Wiri Warriner says he was thrilled with the turnout and hopes the event will become an annual community fixture.

“The event highlighted many strengths of our community, the support for our kura, and the advocacy people have for youth development,” Warriner says.

Alex De Beer won the 5km race in a time of 17:41, while a runner known as “The Adam” took top honours in the 2.5km event, finishing in 9:38.

The Ōrewa College kapa haka group performed the opening welcome for participants.

Planning is already under way for the next  event, with organisers aiming to add a new 10km distance to the programme. Further details will be shared through the Ōrewa College newsletter.

Local sponsors included Bayleys Real Estate, CDS, Cranefield Automotive, More FM Rodney and Sunflour Cafe.
