Stanmore Bay boxer Marcus Heywood had the chance to make history when he took on Tauranga’s Nicholas Benn at Fight Night V in Ōrewa on November 30.
Heywood fought hard in a brutal encounter but ultimately lost the bout.
If he’d won he would have unified the NZ Professional Boxing Commission middleweight with the then vacant Pro Box NZ middleweight title, which was up for grabs – instead the Pro Box NZ belt now belongs to Benn.
Fight Night V promoter Craig Thomson says, “It was the New Zealand fight of the year, absolute war.”
As predicted neither boxer took a backwards step.
“Nick Benn ultimately ground Heywood down and knocked him out in the seventh round, the first time Marcus has ever been stopped.”
