Hundreds come together at Ōrewa surf club to share Matariki

You couldn’t have asked for a more perfect sunrise on the morning of July 10 when hundreds of residents from across the Coast and further away gathered pre-dawn in front of Ōrewa Surf Club to welcome the Matariki stars under a bright crescent moon, share karakia, waiata and kai, reflect on those who were special to them and embrace the coming year.

It is the fourth year for the event, organised by Te Herenga Waka o Ōrewa Marae, with support from Ōrewa Surf Life Saving Club, Hibiscus and Bays Local Board, Xabilities, and Trash Free Taiaotea.

Te Herenga Waka o Ōrewa Marae chair, Kereama Nathan, said at the event that one of his aspirations for the year was a more collaborative approach with the community, and for all the community to celebrate Matariki with them every year.
