Two local dads are inviting Hibiscus Coast residents to lace up their trainers and walk or run for a good cause this month. The Salt Estuary Challenge, happening Sunday May 25 from 8am to 2pm, is the brainchild of Chad Mexted and Joe Long. The pair were part of a local dads’ fitness group running the Ōrewa Estuary loop, when they decided to turn their fitness routine into a community fundraiser.
Their goal? To raise $50,000 for the Salt Community Trust, which supports families through food parcels, school-based youth workers and wellbeing programmes.
Participants can walk or run the estuary loop as many times as they like, either as a competitive challenge or a relaxed outing with whānau and friends. It’s a choose-your-own-pace event, open to all ages and fitness levels.
“All the funds raised will go straight back into our local community,” Chad says. “It’s a fun, healthy way to give back.”
Salt Community Trust plays a vital role in the region, providing practical support for those facing food insecurity, mental health challenges and social isolation. Their work includes running a food bank, placing youth workers in local schools, and supporting people with wellbeing needs.
The challenge starts at Metro Park in Millwater, near the toilet block. The run club will kick things off at 8am, but participants are welcome to join at any time during the event.
