Local Elections 2025: the issues facing the Coast

As we head into local elections, the Hibiscus Coast faces a number of significant issues influenced by Auckland Council policy and decisions.

Infrastructure is an ongoing concern as rapid housing development continues to outpace the capacity of essential services. Watercare’s announcement late last year that its Army Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant is nearing its limit until upgrades in 2031 has created uncertainty for developers and property owners while also raising questions about how it will affect future housing supply.

Transport also remains a major election issue for Hibiscus Coast residents, with concerns focused on traffic congestion, limited public transport options, and the pace of infrastructure upgrades. O Mahurangi Penlink is a central government project run by New Zealand Transport – Waka Kotahi, but a number of Auckland Transport projects are scheduled for the Coast, such as the widening of Whangaparāoa Road, and upgrades to existing roads.

Another key issue has been the response to severe weather events. The Auckland Anniversary floods and Cyclone Gabrielle caused considerable damage across the Coast, highlighting weaknesses in infrastructure and the need for protection of vulnerable coastal areas from severe weather events and adaptation to climate change.

Discussions around flood protection, managed retreat, and coastal preservation have been ongoing, with community groups seeking information and advice on how best to protect their homes and public spaces.

Local concerns have also included youth wellbeing and crime. There have been efforts to engage more young people in community activities and provide better support services, but there is still debate about how to address youth-related antisocial behaviour, particularly in town centres and around transport hubs.

The cost of living and rates affordability is another area of concern for many residents. How do candidates propose to balance community investment with keeping rates under control?
