It was a night of firsts for Manly Fire Brigade as it held an Honours night at Gulf Harbour Yacht Club on October 13.
Until this year, the Silverdale and Manly Fire Brigades held a combined Honours award night each year, as Manly was an auxiliary station under the wing of Silverdale.
As both stations have grown in numbers and calls – with each receiving over 700 calls last year and heading the same for this year – the members decided to hold separate Honours functions to keep the events a manageable size.
Firefighters from both stations still train together and community events are also a combined effort.
Another first at the Manly Honours night was a new award, which will be presented annually in the name of firefighter Andi Jackson who died in 2015. It is awarded to a firefighter who exhibits outstanding leadership, integrity, inspiration, professional excellence and commitment to their community.
The first recipient of the Andi Jackson Trophy Servimus Award was firefighter Deon Holgate. The award was presented by Andi’s husband Rex Watling.
Other awards presented on the night included three Long Service & Good Conduct medals as well as trophies that included most improved member and most musters attended. Members’ choice for firefighter of the year went to qualified firefighter James Macdonald.
