McDonald’s gets creative

The days of discarding food you don’t like from your burger appear to be over.

The Hibiscus Matters team was this week invited to try out a new feature called Create Your Taste, which was introduced at McDonald’s in Orewa last month.

The idea is that customers can construct their own burger, according to their taste and budget.

Orders are placed via a touch screen similar to a mobile phone (but bigger!). It’s a simple process of choosing the foods you like, starting with the bread bun and finishing with the inevitable, “Do you want fries with that?”

As ingredients are added, the total cost updates so that if the customer starts to blow the budget, they can easily remove items accordingly. If tomato isn’t your thing, then simply leave it off your selection.

Manager Brent Rush says the idea was devised by a store owner in Laguna Beach, California. It then spread to Australia and Orewa is one of the first store’s to trial it in NZ.

While the Hibiscus Matters team had no trouble navigating the ordering process, we did find the size of the burgers we’d created a challenge! But even the team member who hadn’t been to McDonald’s for many years had to admit, there was nothing lacking in taste.

The cost averaged around $14 for a burger and drink – and the service was great with the café-like surroundings making it a pleasant lunchtime experience.
