Medal for Milldale’s Mitch

Mitch Joynt is bringing a bronze medal back to Milldale.

Milldale’s Mitch Joynt earned a spot in next year’s Paralympics when he won bronze at the Para Athletics World Champs in Paris last week.

Joynt took third place in the men’s 200mT64 final after Costa Rican Paralympic champion Sherman Guity fell, just metres from the finish line.

Joynt’s medal brought NZ’s total haul to nine medals – two gold, five silver and two bronze –the team’s best performance at the championships for 21 years.

Joynt, 28, had his right leg amputated below the knee 10 years ago following a wood chipper accident, while working as an arborist. He is now a truck driver, and has been sprinting competitively for six years.
