Newest village takes shape

The Coast’s reputation as a retirement destination grows, with the latest village expected to house up to 500 people.

Metlifecare, which owns Hibiscus Coast Village, has moved forward with plans to build a new village on the former Peninsula Golf Club land in Red Beach – these plans were made public by Hibiscus Matters a year ago.

Development manager for the new village, Grant Arbuckle, says an open day held last December showed there is a lot of interest.

He said feedback also touched on whether there will still be public access across the former golf course and how the development will affect views and traffic.

He says these issues are noted and will be dealt with during the resource consent process.

As well as a range of apartments, villas, serviced apartments and a care home, the village will include services such as hairdressing, a wellness clinic, physiotherapy, gym, pool and dining/café facilities.

Mr Arbuckle says because some of these services will be at the edge of the village, they will provide a meeting point for the wider community and village residents.

The tallest buildings are around five storeys high.

A resource consent application is expected to go into Council soon and Mr Arbuckle says there will be full public notification so that the community can give its input.

The proposed date for construction to begin is October 2017.

The company is expected to invest around $150 million in building the village.
