Ōrewa surf life saving turns 75

Ōrewa SLSC – Humble beginnings in a tent.

The surf life saving season officially kicks off on Labour Weekend, with the red and yellow flags flying again at Ōrewa and Wenderholm beaches.

This year marks 75 summers of patrols by the Ōrewa Surf Life Saving Club. Nine teams of volunteer lifeguards will be rostered across the season, supported by paid guards during the peak summer weeks to help keep beachgoers safe.

The club will also deliver water safety education throughout the season and host the senior Auckland All.

To mark the 75th anniversary, the club will hold a special celebration over Labour Weekend. From humble beginnings, when six members operated from a tent on the beach and a driftwood tower, the club has grown into a modern facility and is now planning another major redevelopment.

Past and present members, supporters, and sponsors are invited to join the weekend celebrations, which will feature displays of memorabilia, photographs, trophies, and albums.
