Motorists travelling along State Highway 1 will have noticed a major development in the o Mahurangi Penlink project with the first beams put in place for the future SH1 overbridge.
The overbridge will be one of six that will connect Whangaparāoa to SH1. In total, six beams (Super T Girders) were placed across the motorway. Each beam is 34.5 metres long and weighs around 68 tonnes – it required a 600 tonne crane to lift them into place.
Now the beams are in place, the project will be pouring concrete to construct the bridge deck later this year. They are also starting to construct a retaining wall at Link Road 2 where Bridge 4 will tie into Ara Weiti Road, and a MSE retaining wall for the bridge abutments at Link Road 1.
In Stillwater, the Weiti River bridge is taking shape with the completion of the land based piers and the river piers extended in height. The temporary props (support structures) used to build the bridge deck are under construction.
Later this month, a section of Duck Creek Road will revert back to two lanes with traffic lights controlling site access points during work hours only. Waka Kotahi says these changes will make the journey to and from Stillwater quicker for drivers.
