Phone tracking leads police to Stanmore Bay robbery suspects

Police used location tracking on a stolen mobile phone to find two men accused of assaulting and robbing three teenagers in Stanmore Bay overnight.

Three teenagers were walking along Brightside Road just after midnight when they were confronted by two people who allegedly made threats towards them.

Waitematā CIB acting detective inspector Megan Goldie said the group assaulted one of the victims before making demands for personal items, including clothing they were wearing.

The pair also took the victims’ mobile phones before fleeing the area.

Goldie said Police used a tracking system on one of the phones that led back to an address on Elliston Crescent.

The Police Dog Unit was deployed and located two people inside the property who were quickly taken into custody.

A subsequent search of the address also located the stolen property.

“This successful outcome highlights the importance of timely information being provided to Police,” Goldie said.

“We’re committed to holding those responsible to account and we will use every avenue available to us to do just that.”

Two males, aged 21 and 18, will appear in North Shore District Court charged with aggravated robbery.
