Robins welcomed to sanctuary

SOSSI chair Peter Jackson releases a North Island Robin into its new home at Army Bay.

Twenty North Island Robins (or toutouwai) were released into Shakespear Open Sanctuary on April 8; it is the second bird reintroduction since the sanctuary was made pest free in 2011 – whiteheads were successfully released there last year and are already breeding.

A group of around 40 SOSSI volunteers, representatives of Auckland Council and the NZ Defence Force and researchers interested in the birds were present for the release, which took place on Army land within the open sanctuary.

A further 20 toutouwai will be released in the sanctuary in early May and this time Council hope to be able to increase the public’s participation.
