Seventy-year commitment honoured

Seventy years is a long time to be a member of any organisation, and so it’s no wonder that Hamish Craig of Stanmore Bay, who has been a Freemason since 1946, was awarded suitable honours at Orewa Masonic Lodge recently.

Lodge Orewa publicity convenor Peter Packard says that Hamish, now aged 93, joins a “very very small” number of Masons to be presented with a seventy-year ‘jewel’ – which is in the form of a medal.

A special ceremony took place at Orewa’s Masonic Lodge on February 16, to commemorate this achievement and Hamish’s service to Freemasonry and the community.

He was joined by family members and local Freemasons including the District Grand Master Barry Ruston and Angus Graham. His 70-year jewel was pinned on his jacket by his son, and fellow Lodge member, Jamie Craig.

Hamish’s father, grandfather and great uncle were all members of Lodge Loch Fyne in Scotland. He was asked to join that Lodge in 1946. By 1957 he had moved to New Zealand and became the Master of a Lodge in Otago.

After the family moved to Auckland, Hamish joined the Milford Trinity Lodge, then the Orewa Lodge in 2003.

Peter says that Hamish has been a very active member of the organisation.
