Stories brought to life at Ōrewa

Books took centre stage at Ōrewa Beach School last week, with students joining in a range of activities celebrating reading and storytelling.

The school’s annual Book Week included a Scholastic Book Fair, with the library transformed into an “Enchanted Garden” by a team of enthusiastic Year 6 students, school library coordinator Kelly Fearon says.

Classes visited the fair to create book wish lists, while parents were invited to purchase books after school. The school receives rewards from book sales to help support its reading resources.

Activities during the week included a mystery reader during the morning notices, a bookmark design competition and spontaneous “Stop, Drop and Read” sessions. Student Book Week leaders also ran lunchtime activities.

Author and publisher Ngaire Dolphin visited the school on Wednesday to talk to students about how books are created, from writing through to publication.

The week finished on Friday with a Book Character Dress-up Day, with students and teachers dressing as their favourite characters.

Spot prizes donated by local families and businesses were awarded during the day.
