Top honours again for Ōrewa College

Ōrewa College performing at ShowQuest

Ōrewa College has claimed first place at Auckland ShowQuest 2025 for the second year in a row with its science fiction-inspired performance, Out of This World.

The production explored themes of difference and belonging, earning the school not only the top award but also accolades for Public Speaking, Excellence in Technology, and Recognition in Drama and Art.

ShowQuest is Aotearoa’s largest national performing arts competition. The Auckland final, held on June 18, brought together five of the region’s top secondary schools – all previous winners or finalists. Macleans College placed second and St Cuthbert’s College came in third.

Ōrewa’s performance followed the story of Jimmy, a boy who feels out of place in a world that doesn’t understand him. Set “a long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away,” the show followed Jimmy’s dream of escape to a place where being different isn’t wrong.

Principal Wiri Warriner said the win was well-earned.

“Watching the performances was a true showcase of the exceptionally high calibre of competition, from schools like Macleans and St Cuthbert’s who placed second and third. I’m incredibly proud of our students and staff for taking out first place at ShowQuest for the second year running. It’s a real testament to our team’s creativity, hard work, and dedication,” he said.

The school dedicated months to choreography, costume and set design, technical planning, and long rehearsals – often late into the night – to bring Out of This World to life.

This year’s team included 97 students from Years 7 to 13, representing the full spectrum of the school community, from 1st XV rugby players to students of dance, drama, visual art, technology, and academic disciplines.
