Training rain or shine

Ten-year-old Gulf Harbour School student Hunter Brown is looking forward to doing the Tongariro Crossing later this year with his classmates.

The 19.4km tramp is a challenge that requires good fitness and Hunter’s mum, Marie, says she was surprised, and a bit skeptical, when Hunter suggested he train by walking from his home in Ferry Road, Arkles Bay, to school each day.

She has been proved wrong – Hunter has been doing the 9.5km walk every day, whatever the weather, leaving at 7am.

The walk takes 1.5 hours and on wet days, he takes an umbrella.

The Gulf Harbour School students are doing the crossing in Term 4, so there is another full term of walking ahead for Hunter.

Give him a friendly wave or toot your horn if you see him.
