Vandals target street signs

Auckland Transport (AT) has noticed a flurry of vandalism activity in Whangaparaoa in recent days, largely related to street signs.

AT spokesperson Natalie Polley suggests this could be caused by boredom.

The problem started, not long before the Covid-19 lockdown, with the removal of flexi posts from between the speed humps on Laurence Street in Manly. One of these vandals was caught by Police and fined $800.

Fulton Hogan repaired about 30 signs recently in the Gulf Harbour area and overnight on April 7, three street signs in Manly were knocked out of the ground, which Fulton Hogan has also been asked to fix.

Some signs can be repaired on site and others may need to be replaced.

AT is continuing to perform the work necessary to ensure the safety and operation of the network – although work has been scaled back during the lockdown.

Anyone who has any information regarding the vandalism should contact Police.
