Video meets mixed response

A video promoting the Hibiscus Coast, launched this week, will be open sourced so that anyone in the region can use it.

The three-minute clip was launched on November 30 at an invitation-only event in Silverdale. It was made by Logan Dodds and funded by the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board, as part of its eco-tourism strategy, at a cost of $15,000. The aim is to promote the region as a tourist destination.

The local board previewed the clip and while most members are excited at its potential, not all are as impressed.
Member David Cooper, who represents the Bays (North Shore) subdivision, voted against approving the launch of the video at the local board’s November meeting, saying he doesn’t think it promotes enough of the local ‘gems’ such as hot pools, surf lifesaving clubs and playgrounds.

“It’s more like a music video and quite noisy,” he said.

In response, ATEED external relations senior advisor, Michael Goudie, said that Logan Dodds was specifically chosen to make the video for his ability to build excitement and so it was always going to harness his personal style.

At workshops, members also raised concerns about activities showcased that include “an element of risk” such as jumping from local cliffs. Mr Goudie said at the meeting that legal advice is being sought about the local board’s liability, should anyone try those activities after seeing the clip.

Photos from the launch will be on Hibiscus Matters’ Facebook page after November 30, and a copy of the video itself will be linked to this story as it is made available.
