Whale bone vanishes from Silverdale Pioneer Village

The missing whale bone.

Silverdale Pioneer Village is calling for a return of the historic whale bone that went missing last month.

Silverdale and District Historical Society president Ian Hacking first noticed the whale vertebrae were missing on Saturday, September 6 before the village opened to the public for its weekend tours. The piece normally sat on a large log near the top of the stairs of the village.

The whale vertebrae have been on display for more than 50 years, and although cracked and withered with age, are roughly around the size and shape of a large anchor.

“Children loved to see it on school visits,” Ian says.

He asked everyone to keep an eye out for the artifact and to contact Pioneer Village if they have any information about its whereabouts.
