Young Coast swimmer breaks Auckland record

Ten-year-old Hibiscus Coast swimmer Cora Yi has made a strong mark on the regional swimming scene after a standout performance at the SBOP Junior Clash in Tauranga late last year.

Cora competed on December 13 and 14 in the Girls 12 and Under age group, where she was the youngest athlete in the field. Racing against swimmers up to two years older, she finished second overall, just two seconds behind the winner.

The meet also delivered a major milestone. In the short course (25m) 400m individual medley, Cora broke the Auckland 10-year-old girls’ record, a mark that had stood since 2009. The swim also set a new Coast Swim Club age-group record.

Cora moved from mainland China to the Hibiscus Coast in 2021 and began swimming at Northern Arena Swimming School, where she developed strong technical skills. By the age of eight, she had qualified for Auckland Level Two and joined Coast Swim Club’s junior squad, coached by Teegan Farr.

Her coaches say her greatest strength is her love of the sport and her willingness to commit to regular training, attending five sessions a week. Coast Swim Club says the result is an important step in Cora’s development, rather than a final goal.

The club thanked coach Teegan Farr and the wider Coast Swim Club community for their ongoing support and commitment to developing young swimmers in a positive and encouraging environment.
