Zoe Pedersen shortlisted amongst New Zealand’s greatest rising stars

Whangaparāoa College student Zoe Pedersen has been selected as a finalist in the prestigious Halberg Awards, placing her among New Zealand’s top emerging sporting talents.

From 59 nominations, the finalists were chosen by a panel of former athletes, coaches, sports administrators and media representatives.

The awards recognise outstanding sporting achievements between December 1, 2024 and November 30, 2025.

From winning gold at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships to holding a youth world record in surf lifesaving, Pedersen’s achievements have earned her a finalist nomination, with Whangaparāoa College saying the community is incredibly proud of her dedication, humility, and world-class talent.

Pedersen continues to train with Coast Swim Club under coach John Gatfield, having been a member of the club since the age of nine.

She has previously featured in Hibiscus Matters following earlier success and says she remains motivated by her enjoyment of the sport, balancing school commitments with an intensive training schedule. (Hibiscus Matters, Sept 9, 22 2025).

There are 32 finalists in the Halberg Awards across six categories: Sportswoman of the Year, Sportsman of the Year, Para Athlete or Para Team of the Year, Team of the Year, Coach of the Year and Emerging Talent. The Emerging Talent category recognises young athletes who have demonstrated exceptional potential and performance at national or international level.

Pedersen is one of five finalists in the Emerging Talent category, alongside Lily Greenough (cycling-BMX), Finley Melville Ives (snow sports–freeski), Sam Ruthe (athletics) and Braxton Sorensen-McGee (rugby union).

Now in its 63rd year, the ISPS Handa Halberg Awards have previously honoured some of Aotearoa’s greatest athletes, including Dame Lydia Ko.

The ceremony will be held on February 16 and broadcast live from 8pm on Sky Open and Sky Sport.
