A local connection with an iconic Kiwi food brand is being celebrated at Couldrey House in Waiwera until the end of November.
The exhibition, Edmonds & Couldrey House: From Recipe Books to Family History, features vintage recipe books, classic advertising and kitchen memorabilia, including items belonging to the Edmonds family and exhibits from Warkworth and Puhoi Museums.
Warkworth Museum manager Victoria Joule, who also looks after the museum side at the historic Wenderholm Regional Park house, says many people wouldn’t know about the special family connection between Edmonds and Couldrey House, hence the exhibition.
“Brenda Edmonds, who married Tim Couldrey, was the granddaughter of Thomas Edmonds, the man behind the famous “Sure to Rise” brand,” she says. “We wanted to highlight this unique family connection and encourage more people to visit and discover the stories behind Couldrey House.”
The exhibition includes personal items belonging to the great-great-granddaughter of Thomas Edmonds, Kate Parsonson, whose book Sure to Rise: The Story of Edmonds was published in 2023.
The exhibition is open daily from Wednesday to Sunday between 1pm and 4pm until Sunday, November 30, when a special finale celebration is being held until 6pm.
There will be home-baked cakes, slices, biscuits and more on sale to raise funds for Couldrey House, plus a raffle with New World $100 and $50 grocery vouchers and a signed copy of Sure to Rise: The Story of Edmonds as prizes.
There will also be a limited number of signed editions of the Edmonds story book for sale, together with a selection of Edmonds-branded merchandise.
In addition, anyone dressed in a nostalgic, Edmonds-inspired outfit will receive free entry to the house and exhibition (normally $7 for adults; anyone aged 16 or under gets in free).
