The Netball Rodney Centre has appealed to the Rodney Local Board to help it keep the momentum going on the redevelopment of Centennial Park in Wellsford.
At a meeting on March 18, centre president Kellie Ayres thanked the board for the four new netball courts, but added there was still work to be done.
“The courts look fantastic, and we’re excited to be able to use them safely this season,” she said. “But we want to push on with the redevelopment masterplan, which will make Centennial Park the sports and recreation hub of the district.”
She said Auckland Council had already approved $400,000 for the design and consent phase, but it wouldn’t be enough.
“We really hope the Board will also support us with funding. Ideally, we would like to design and consent the whole park at once.”
Asked about the provision of storage, Ayres said the long-term aim was to have a multi-use indoor facility that would include storage for various sports codes.
“In the interim, we’ve looked at getting a shipping container.”
She said a sports collective was in the process of formalising its governance structure, representing hundreds of players across a range of clubs including netball, rugby, A&P Society, tennis and archery.
She added that the fact that people could see some progress on the plan would attract other sports to consider joining the collective. The design and consent phase was for facilities for all sports codes and would include upgrades to the rugby club rooms and changing rooms, which were currently only used by the rugby club.
Meanwhile, the Wellsford Netball Club has asked the board to ensure it is included in the redevelopment. A spokesperson said the club needs a home base to store equipment with designated space for its activities, which cater for players from Warkworth to Maungaturoto.
Currently, it is storing equipment and uniforms at officials’ homes.
