Centre Plan thoughts collated

The team developing the Puhinui* Warkworth Centre Plan will come back to the community in December for more feedback on some potential design options for the riverside and town centre.

The plan is a collaboration between the Rodney Local Board and Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust, and the goal is to develop a town plan that will set the direction for creating a unique and beautiful riverside town that is well designed, meets the needs of the whole community and nurtures and protects the river.

The 12-month project is being led by Community Think and Motu Design, and is about halfway through.

Initial engagement has been made available through a wide range of forums and activities in schools and the community.

Early last month, a meaning-making session was held on the main themes that had come from the engagement process.

People expressed concern that the new motorway and big box developments might draw people away from the town centre, and talked about a sustainable vision for the town with op shops, community gardens and a local circular economy forming draw cards for residents and visitors.

People also talked about the different spaces that could be activated – spaces by the river, the laneways and the pathways connecting the town, the river and green spaces.

Following feedback in December, Motu Design will work on a draft town centre plan that will be available for further community consultation and input early in the new year.
