Critical injuries reported in SH1 crash near Wellsford

State Highway 1 is blocked in both directions near Wellsford following a serious crash that has reportedly left people critically injured.

Motorists are being diverted and warned to expect delays.

Police were alerted to the crash near River Road at 2pm, with initial reports indicating critical injuries. The Serious Crash Unit has been advised.

Both north and south bound lanes are blocked, with diversions in place at State Highway 16 and Woodcocks Road.

Police have advised motorists to avoid the area if possible.

Hato Hone St John said two ambulances, two rapid response units, two helicopters and one operations manager went to the scene.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said State Highway 1 is closed in both directions between Warkworth and Wellsford, and said motorists should delay their journey or allow extra time for a detour via State Highway 16 from Silverdale, using Diary Flat Rd and Kahikatea Flat Rd, in both directions.

Those from Warkworth have been asked to detour via SH16, using Woodcocks Rd and West Coast Rd, in both directions.
