Easter opening on the Brynderwyns

Transport Minister Simeon Brown visited the Brynderwyn work site this morning.

State Highway 1 across the Brynderwyns will open temporarily for Easter this weekend.

The road will open to all traffic for six days from 12:01am on Thursday (28 March) until 11:59pm next Tuesday (2 April).

Waka Kotahi says that during the six-day reopening people can expect to see safety measures in place near to areas crews have been working.

“We ask all road users to allow extra time for their journey as traffic volumes will be increased over the holiday period.”

The Brynderwyn Hills have been temporarily closed so work could be done faster to make the road more reliable before winter. Work has included excavating, hydroseeding, installing retaining walls and cutting over 127,000 m³ of soil.

When finished, traffic lanes will be moved closer to the hill and a shoulder created allowing more room to clear slips and debris.

Repair work is expected to end on May 13.
