Fashion statement made at Mahu

The Wearable Arts showcase at Mahurangi College was the culmination of 11 weeks of hard work, creativity, and collaboration by Year 8 students and ran over two nights at the school – Monday, July 21 and Tuesday, July 22.

It was the third year of the project and is part of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) curriculum.

Once again, the show was packed with plenty of support for the students from parents and the community.

Picture, above, is the ‘Paper and Cardboard’ group, who could only use these materials to make their costumes. The other categories were ‘Recycled, Upcycled’, ‘Textiles’, and ‘Headdresses’.

STEAM department head Geraldine Healy said they were blown away by the quality of what the Year 8 students produced.

The judges picked winners from each category as well as two overall winners – one from each syndicate: Huia – Taylor Redell; Kea – Jacob Knapp. Photo, Momo Zhu
