Whangateau Domain was alive on Sunday March 22 when the Rodney Rams hosted a Family Fun Day with a clear goal – to bring young players into rugby league.
League stalwart Dave Lepper and his son Gary ran a coaching session in the first half of the afternoon.
Around 15 children, aged under 10, took part. The drills were simple and sharp, with a focus on fun, skill and confidence.
By 2pm, the young players were ready and the Rodney Rams faced the Northcote Tigers in an exhibition match. It was a quick and open game, ending in a draw.
“Rugby League was the winner today,” Lepper said.
The BBQ fired up soon after with sizzling sausages and all the extras – all complementary for players, families and spectators.
“We all gathered on the deck of the clubhouse, which stood out as a strong step forward for the club.
“The Auckland Rugby League message, ‘League Is Us’ rang true.”
New members are welcome. The club also invites locals to Thursday night dinners from 4.30pm to meet club members. For more information on playing rugby league, visit: https://www.sporty.co.nz/rodneyrams.
