The Rodney Local Board has approved renewing both the Leigh Bowling Club and Leigh Tennis Club leases for premises in Albert Street Leigh.
It has been recommended that the 10-year leases be granted at an annual rental of $1300 plus GST, if demanded.
However, the approvals were not passed without member Lisa Whyte commenting on the need to have a strategic discussion about community leases and the budgetary impacts.
She said she understood [the reason for] the token $1 rental, but at some point the board would have to charge groups.
In response, member Colin Smith said while appreciating member Whyte’s concerns, a lot of clubs were struggling. “A lot of clubs would collapse if we did as you are suggesting,” he said.
