New motocross track caters for northern junior racers

Riders put the new track through its paces last month.

A new motocross track in Whangaripo held it first meet on Sunday, November 23, with a competition organised by North Harbour Mini Motocross.

The dirt bike riders, all aged between four and 16 years, rode in both fun and competition races.

The land is owned by Mason Contractors’ managing director Lance O’Callaghan, who has three children involved in the sport.

“There aren’t many facilities north of Auckland so we decided to make one here,” he said.

He said the recent closure of the Dome Valley Moto Park, which closed permanently in July when the land was acquired for the State Highway 1 (SH1) motorway extension, was also a factor in his decision.
Dobbyn Builders assisted with design of the new track, and built a clubroom and facilities.

O’Callaghan says the track will be for the exclusive use of the North Harbour Minis, and will probably be used four or five times a year.

Mini motocross provides a safe, family-friendly environment for kids to learn to ride.

Meanwhile, the Kaipara Motorcycle Club has three IPONE events planned at the start of next year. The family trail rides will be held at Kaipara Flats on January 18, at Whangaripo February 15 and on a farm on the Kaipara Coast Highway on March 15.

Organisers say the tracks will be marked clearly for all levels of riders.
