The stories of Dr Seuss will come to life on stage at Mahurangi College when students in Years 7 to 9 present Seussical Jr next month.
The show takes audiences into the whimsical world of Dr Seuss, featuring beloved characters such as Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and JoJo. The story follows Horton’s quest to protect the tiny Whos of Whoville and an abandoned egg, celebrating friendship, loyalty and imagination.
Director Jonathan Dutton says more than 130 students are involved as either cast or crew.
“It’s one of our biggest productions yet,” he says. “The college productions alternate between senior and junior students, in order to explore new opportunities and give participants of all ages the chance to experience performing.
“We’re really grateful for the volunteers that are helping out – you can feel the buzz of activity at rehearsals.”
Dutton says former students from previous shows are also involved, returning to support the younger cast members.
The production team includes Tracey Hansen as producer, Vicky Davies on costumes, Gareth McNaughten and Lori McNaughten as stage managers, Abby McNae in the green room, and Emma Pearson as vocal coach.
Performances will be in the school auditorium from June 25 to 27, at 7pm, with an additional matinee performance on Saturday June 27, at 2pm. Tickets are $20, or $10 for students and seniors, and are available via iTicket.
