The Orewa College boys’ First XI hockey team beat Mahurangi College 3-2 in the annual Greenwood Cup match, played at the Warkworth Showgrounds on Tuesday June 30.
The result sees the cup remain at Orewa College, which has held the trophy continuously since it was introduced for the boys in 2020.
The teams were evenly matched, but Orewa managed to keep its nose in front throughout the game and was more effective when opportunities arose.
The goals were scored by Sean Hunt, Zander Pienaar and Denin Cotterell for Orewa, while Zac Barrell and Alex Hart scored for Mahurangi.
The girls’ competition was played earlier this year at the North Harbour Hockey Stadium, with Mahurangi College securing a 2-0 victory, meaning both schools claimed a win in this year’s Greenwood Cup fixtures.
The Greenwood Cup is an annual competition associated with the Greenwood family, which has a long history of involvement with hockey in the Rodney district.
The trophies recognise the family’s continued contribution to hockey across generations, supporting both the boys’ and girls’ teams.
