Compared to last season, the weather has been brilliant for bowls and the Leigh Bowling Club has been busy.
We’d like to thank Biscuit for all the time he puts into organising and running one of our most popular events – the business house bowls. We held the prizegiving for this on February 26, which was generously sponsored by the Bridgehouse Warkworth and Jason Adams Painters with numerous prizes handed out. The main prize went to overall winners Andrew Young, Patrick Betts and Lindsay Duncan from Kingtide Tattoos.
We can’t wait for next season’s business house competition.
The first-year singles championship was held on February 8. Each of the three players had one win, so for-and-against and ends-won decided the placings with Andrew Chambers first, Bryn Gundy second and Phil Parkes third.
On February 15, the president’s invitation and Leigh Fish event combined with the postponed Yovich & Co Four tournament. Thanks to the sponsorship of Leigh Fish and Jason Adams Painters there were plenty of prizes to be won, both on the green and in the raffles. The Keith Lineham team from Mangawhai were the winners while Warkworth’s Steve Syric won the corner-to-corner competition.
On February 7, the Kitty Hawkes club arrived by bus from Auckland. It was a fun tournament and an enjoyable day was had by all. The Kitty Hawkes donated $600 to the Leigh Fire Brigade, which they raised on the day.
We competed at the Northland Champion of Champions tournament, which features the championship winners from each Northland club to find the overall winner for the region, on March 22 in the pairs and March 23 in the singles – but our teams missed out on the podium.
We’re hoping to go better in the Northland Champion of Champion triples and fours events on April 26 and April 27 respectively.
Unfortunately, the Lion Red-sponsored triples on March 20 was called off.
But we’ve still got the life members triples on April 5 to look forward to, which is the last tournament of the season.
Our membership draw continues on Wednesday evenings with 125 members, the bar is still open Wednesday to Saturday, from 4pm, and meals are available on Wednesday and Friday evenings. All are welcome.
