Trophy haul for bowls debutante

Stein with her silverware.

Warkworth Bowls has uncovered a hidden sporting talent after Wendy Stein, of Kaipara Flats, turned in a stellar debut season.

Stein, who only started playing bowls last September, was presented with an impressive seven trophies at the end of season prizegiving on May 31.

She said that she knew within a week or two of starting bowls that she would love the game, and was grateful for early guidance from fellow bowlers.

“I was fortunate that on day one, the club coach Cathy Parsons took me onto the green to show me the game and advise on etiquette,” she said.

A senior member of the club, Kevin Brooking, recognised Stein’s natural ability and concentration, and suggested that maybe a little coaching could help her to become a good, consistent bowler.

Stein credits her success to a strong work ethic and supportive fellow club members.

“For me, focused hard work leads to success. It’s a matter of having faith in yourself, being consistent and showing motivation.”

Stein’s commitment extends beyond the green, as she assisted with business house bowls and is on the match committee.

“Being a volunteer and getting involved makes for a well-run club. The twice-weekly roll-up afternoons are played in a fun and friendly environment.

“On the other hand, when it comes to club championship games, then the serious side of the bowlers can be seen, all playing with increased focus to get their hands on a cup.”
