Warkworth Walks has confirmed its dates for this year, with a range of walks taking place across the Mahurangi area from Friday, November 20 to Sunday, November 22.
The project, which aims to showcase some of the most extraordinary walking locations in the Mahurangi area, will feature two trails on Friday, five on Saturday and five on Sunday located around Warkworth, Takatu, Atiu, Pūhoi, and Mahurangi East and West.
Organiser Luke Williamson said one of the special aspects of the event is the team’s effort to gain access to private land, allowing walkers to visit places they would not normally be able to access.
“We are lucky to have regional parks, beautiful coastline and access to a wide variety of terrain,” Williamson said.
“The experience of meeting a group of like-minded walkers, hearing interesting stories and learning about the areas we visit makes it really special and enjoyable.”
The walks are graded according to difficulty, with grade one being the most accessible and grade five recommended for experienced walkers.
This year’s new addition is the Short & Starry Trail, which will start with a guided tour of the Warkworth Satellite Station, an area no longer accessible to the public. Participants will then walk through surrounding private farmland to Thompson Road before returning to town.
“Prices are still being finalised, but they will range from $20 to $117 per walk, with each trail having a different cost depending on the bus trip and any extras involved, such as kayak hire for the most expensive route,” Williamson said.
Warkworth Walks was created in 2009 and has since become an annual walking event celebrating the region’s landscapes and community, with the exception of 2021, when it was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic.
