The New Zealand women’s Masters hockey team has won a silver medal in the Over-35 category at the Masters World Cup in Schiedam, Netherlands, with Warkworth resident Monique Hatfull part of the squad.
After securing wins against Australia, Wales, Kenya and the United States before defeating Germany in the semi-final, New Zealand lost the final 2-1 to England, finishing second on the podium.
For Monique, representing New Zealand at a World Cup was a dream come true.
“Reaching the final and playing in the Netherlands, the capital of world sport, was truly incredible,” Monique said.
“Reconnecting with old friends after so many years was something I will never forget.”
Monique scored four goals during the tournament, placing her among the top 10 goal scorers in the competition.
Other Warkworth players also took part in the tournament. Cory Argyle represented the New Zealand Over-35 men’s team, which finished seventh, while Johnny Boyle and Craig Radford were part of the Over-45 men’s team, which finished ninth.
“It has been an absolute privilege and I am incredibly grateful. None of this would have been possible without the support of all my sponsors, my husband, friends and family, and my work team, who went the extra mile to help me make this dream a reality,” Monique said.
