Young leader shows the way at Pakiri

A Pakiri School student who heads up a school enterprise to make and sell beeswax food wraps has received national recognition for her leadership skills.

Ava Brown, 10, of Pakiri Beach was presented with a 2018 Sir Peter Blake Young Leaders Award at a special community afternoon tea last month by award sponsor Westpac Bank’s Warkworth manager, Jac Holder.

Pakiri School principal Ingrid Stewart said award recipients had to have integrity, determination and be a good role model.

“Ava easily fulfils all these requirements,” she said. “We make eco-wraps for food and sell them in Tea & Tonic in Matakana. Ava took it all on – she went and visited Tea & Tonic, did all the sales and she does all the invoicing, too.”

Ava received a medal and certificate, as well as a book about Sir Peter Blake, a pin and a pair of red socks.
