Seventeen community groups and schools across Kaipara District will benefit from a funding boost of more than $33,000, thanks to two key grant schemes administered by the Kaipara District Council.
The funding was allocated through the Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund and the Creative Communities Scheme – Arts Funding. These grants aim to improve access to sports and arts activities for young people and communities throughout the district.
The Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund, which subsidises travel for rural junior sports teams aged five to 18 years, awarded grants to several local schools including Otamatea High School, which will receive $2254 to help cover travel costs for competitions in hockey, football, basketball and rugby. The travel fund is designed to reduce the financial barriers for rural families and promote active participation in local sports.
In the arts sector, just over $17,000 was distributed in the first round of Creative Communities Scheme funding for 2025. This scheme supports projects that encourage community involvement in the arts, celebrate cultural diversity and engage young people in creative activities.
Among the successful recipients was the Company of Giants to support the production of their Northland-grown play A Vaudeville of Flowers and Te Ata Hou Roopu and Friends United were awarded $2488 to deliver a Matariki Exhibition Wananga, which will feature workshops in weaving, collaging, jewellery making, resin art, and Māori cultural themes.
More details on all successful applicants are available at kaipara.govt.nz/funding. Applications for the Creative Communities Scheme are open until 31 July, while the next round of rural travel funding opens in August.
