The Maungatūroto based food bank re-opened last week under new management.
Funding issues forced Otamatea Community Services, which had run the foodbank since the 1990s, to close the service in March.
At the time, the service was providing food for between 10 and 15 families a week. The support amounted to about $250 worth of groceries per family.
Manager Damian Stansfield said food donations from businesses and the public made up about 30 per cent of the weekly parcels, leaving the service to buy the remaining 70 per cent, with wages and a commercial rent on top.
“This decision wasn’t taken lightly, however to continue to be able to offer all our other services to the community long-term it was necessary,” he said.
The Good News Church has stepped up to take over the foodbank, re-opening it last Monday May 12.
Facilitator and church leader Steve Rosser says the new service will be based at 89 Hurndall Street, next to the church, and will open every Monday afternoon, from 2pm to 4.30pm.
The church hopes to keep overheads low by using an existing church building and running the service with volunteers.
“We’re very grateful to Otamatea Services for donating much of the equipment to get us started such as fridges and freezers, and shelving,” Steve says.

“We want the community to know that the foodbank is there for anyone who needs it – no-one will be turned away and there will be no bias or judgement.
“We will be working closely with Otamatea Services and referring our foodbank clients to them if they need budgeting advice, counselling or the services of a social worker.”
The foodbank is just one of a number of initiatives run by the church. It also holds a community dinner every second month, runs a monthly youth group, accommodates Mainly Music classes and runs a Christian school.
“The foodbank is just another way for the church to participate in the community by helping those in need,” Steve says.
The church would welcome food donations, either purchased by the donor or extra produce from their orchard or garden.
