Mayor takes sideways step

The race for the mayoralty of Kaipara has been thrown wide open following the shock decision by incumbent Craig Jepson not to contest the top job in October’s local government election.

However, Jepson will contest a seat on council as one of the three Kaiwaka-Mangawhai representatives.

In a statement last week, he said the decision to step down from the mayoralty was not made lightly.

“I am proud of what has been achieved during this current three-year term and I am confident the district is now positioned for significant progress,” he said.

“When I stood for Mayor in 2022, I committed to instigating the necessary changes that would set Kaipara on the right path. I believe I have honoured that commitment.”

Jepson said a key milestone this term included keeping rates under 9%, which he described as a remarkable achievement with Kaipara’s small rating base, especially during a time of national economic strain.

“While the national average rates increase across the country reached 15%, we have stayed focused and disciplined. This is despite major challenges such as Cyclone Gabrielle, and the Mangawhai rain and tornado events.”

Referring to the disestablishment of Kaipara’s Maori Ward, Jepson said the removal of race-based representation was a key principle during his leadership.

“Removing race-based wards was an important and principled part of that stance,” he said.

He said that during his term, he had focussed on reducing unnecessary compliance costs for farmers, growers, and small businesses across the district, ensuring Kaipara remained a place where local enterprise could thrive.

He expressed his gratitude to his council colleagues for their collaboration and support, particularly Deputy Mayor Jonathan Larsen.

“I fully endorse and support his intention to stand for the mayoralty.

“I’m not stepping back – I’m stepping across. I’m energised and ready to continue contributing to our district,” he said.

Mayor Jepson concluded by thanking the people of Kaipara for their trust and support.

“It has been an honour to serve as your mayor. I remain committed to the success of Kaipara and look forward to continuing that service in a new role.”
