Some champions are returning to defend their titles at the annual Mangawhai Tennis Club championships, which start this month.
Two-time over-70s mixed doubles champions, Rosanne Davies and Marc Kaemper, will team up again in an attempt to defend their title for a third consecutive year.
Committee president and defending men’s doubles champion, Grant van Dalsum, will also compete in the event, although with a new partner. He and son Connor won the title last year but Connor, who was also the singles champion last year, will not be competing this year.
The competition will start on Sunday March 15 with the men’s and women’s singles. The men’s and women’s doubles will be played a week later. The third and final week of competition will be reserved for the open mixed doubles (all ages) and the over-70s mixed doubles.
President van Dalsum described the tournament as “an opportunity for all members who would like to be recognised as some of the better players in the club”.
On March 29, a barbecue will also be held around 1pm for both players and spectators.
Club treasurer and committee member Katsue Toddun says the championship is an important event on the club calendar.
“The recent election of the new committee has brought fresh energy,” she says.
“We have created a new website, and our online booking system has been well used by visitors – nearly 1.5 times more compared with the same period last year.”
The club has around 120 adult members and 64 juniors. It has continued to invest in its facilities, renovating two of the six courts and installing of new LED floodlights on the car park side of courts one and six.
