HOSPICE FEATURE: Services meet family needs

Hospice is a free service that offers care for people living with a terminal illness and their families.

The community nursing and family support service helps patients remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Some of the ways hospice helps is as follows:
•    helping manage medications to  reduce symptoms
•    providing equipment to improve  mobility and comfort
•    counselling and bereavement  support to patients and family members for as long as they need it
•    coordinating volunteers to be a “family friend”, help with shopping, outings, reading to patients, helping patients continue their hobbies, and offering respite for their carers
•    arranging for a volunteer to write a patient’s memoirs or any word they want to leave for their loved ones
•    inviting patients and carers to Tui House for a massage, manicure or art therapy session, or providing stress-relieving treatments at home.
